How can I choose from web hosting companies?

It seems like there are a million web hosting companies out here. I don’t know which ones to choose. Could you share any experiences you may have with your web hosting companies? I’m trying to build a couple of websites to support my business, and I want to get the hosting right the first time around.

1       I like having options. I try to get as much info about the web hosting companies as possible, compare them, then make a decision. It depends on your business, I think. Certain features might make more sense for you than others. Carefully compare different web hosting companies. Read some reviews like:http://www.the-best-webhosting.com
Good luck, love.P.S. I personally like HostGator because of their unlimited domains feature. But a lot of web hosting companies have that feature

2       Go with the cheapest. We offer .50 a month hosting. Nothing to lose.

How do you put up a website without paying for web hosting?

Not asking about free web hosting. I mean, how do you setup a website without using a web hosting service. Obviously they run their own website and support other peoples. There can’t just be a never ending chain of web hosts supporting each other. So there should be a way to just buy a domain and host your own website, right?

1      You can host your own website but it means that you have to have a server, or computer acting as a server running 24hrs a day. Also your ISP may not like you doing this and will restrict, or shutdown your connection. Another thing that you need to consider is that your upload speed is usually significantly slower than your download speed, usual speeds are around 128-384 kbps. This means that if you host a popular site the amount of time it takes for your viewers to view each page will be terribly long to the point of being a victim of it’s own success.
My advice is either use a free hosting service, with it’s downsides or pay for a professional service who can offer significant access speeds.

2       To host your own, get a pc and install linux or windows with IIS on it. Find out if your ISP blocks port 80 (Inbound HTTP). If so, route a different port (8080) on your router to port 80 for the IP on the new PC. Buy a URL through GoDaddy, redirect the site to your router’s IP and the port you chose other than 80. Build a simple web page, have a friend test.

what art most important features to look for in a web hosting service?

I am new at web design, and in the process of trying to find a good web hosting service. I plan on having lots of videos and photos on my sites, and was wondering what kind of features are the most important for me to be looking for when searching for a web host. Are some servers faster than others? If so, which are the fastest? And is it better to go with a windows or linux server? Are there any other important features that I need to look for? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

1        Well, it depends on how much you want to spend.

a. If you’re willing to pay $20+/monthly for hosting I recommend:

http://www.mediatemple.com

http://www.slicehost.com

b. If you want something cheaper I recommend Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Their standard price is $119.40/year ($9.95/month if you pay yearly) but they currently have a promotion. You can use the promo code PLUS at sign up page and get the $50 discount + 2 Free domain names. This way you get them for $69.40/year ($5.78/month). You can use their huge Disk Space and host unlimited number of subdomains and domains on a single plan.

Disk space: 500 GB
Bandwidth: 5000 GB
2 Free domain names
Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)

2       Since you’re having lots of videos and photos, you want LOTS of and I mean LOTS of bandwidth (amount of data transfer). Web space is important too especially with videos taking up a lot of space, but you really need bandwidth to actually let users see the videos. And, you want good uptime, at least 95%. What’s the point of all that space and bandwidth if you can’t use it?

Also, it depends on if you’re planning to do lots of cgi/php/other similar languages scripting. If you do, you may want to find places that have more than one MYSQL database. But for your purposes, the most important things are 1) bandwidth 2) webspace

3       The most important feature is reliability at a good price. You don’t want you site to go offline. You want your site to be FAST as well. I also want to be able to host unlimited domains/subdomains and to have unlimited band available. Also I want tons of databases available. All for less than $10. Any more than this is a rip off.
IX are the best for all this.
Btw,
if you are wanting to have videos on your site, the shrewd way to do is to upload them on youtube (where they also get traffic on their own right) and then just embed them into your site so you won’t use any band and you have youtube reliability.
Linux is the most used, you’ll come across tons of scripts that need linux to run.

4       Bandwidth and disk space is important for you, linux servers are the fastest. I can provide hosting for you starting at $1.99 per a month and a domain for $9.00 per year

What is the best web hosting for an online storefront?

Looking for web hosting and sites that will allow a storefront with ease. I will be designing the website. I need something that allows ease of use, customer service, online storefront, shipping costs and database inside. Please no sales reps from companies, only people who have used these sites and know about them. Thanks!

1       Buy web space from any provider who supports PHP and MySQL and get the free (open source) software OSCommerce. It is made by a bunch of technical guys who want to be able to run their web shops for free. You don’t need to pay anyone to install it, you just upload the code to your website then visit the installation page, and you are not tied in to some third party or an expensive contract.

It supports many different credit card authorization companies, it is multi-lingual, supports tax calculations, shipping rates, mailing lists, and just about everything you expect from a commercial shop.

My favourite feature is you can make a PayPal shop with no costs at all, as long as you have a PayPal account.

I would recommend “Nearly Free Speech” as a hosting company, I’m not affilliated with them in any way but I love their policy of paying for web hosting by the penny.
